AI News: Dots, Sol, Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 4 Argon, and More

A busy launch week is easiest to misread as a list of products you can all use today. In his 2 October AI news episode, Matt Wolfe moves from OpenAI DevDay to Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 4 Argon, image creation, team agents, and voice models. The useful question for a working team is narrower: what changed, who has access, and which workflow is worth testing?

The week in one view

Use now, with plan or product conditions: GPT-6.1 Sol, Sonnet 5.5, Ideogram 4.5, and several voice tools. Limited or rolling out: Dots, the Decisions API, and Gemini 4 Argon. The durable pattern: agents are gaining continuity while compact models make constrained decisions faster. Neither removes the need to check access, permissions, or output quality.

OpenAI DevDay: An Agent, a Faster Model, and New Distribution

Dots is the headline: an ongoing assistant that can coordinate tasks, connected tools, and scheduled work. Matt describes his early experience with proactive messages and an inbox workflow, including a correction after a Dot sent an email when he wanted a draft. That is a creator observation, not a promise of universal reliability. Start with a narrow briefing and require approval before sending. Dots is rolling out to eligible plans; personal Pro access initially excludes the EEA, Switzerland, and UK, while Business Premium is listed across supported regions.

OpenAI's recap makes the other status lines clearer. GPT-6.1 Sol is available in the API and eligible paid Work/Codex surfaces as a coding and agent workhorse. Astra Ultrafast is a separate premium speed option; Sol Ultrafast was described as coming later. The Decisions API, which targets finite-choice classification and routing, is in limited preview. The updated Agents API adds computer use, with access tied to its supported developer and Work surfaces. Evaluate the model and the orchestration API separately.

Space and Pages give teams editable artifacts for research and collaboration. The Meetings plugin was announced in beta for eligible macOS plans; slide collaboration remains forthcoming. Sign in with ChatGPT lets eligible users bring plan allowance into participating apps, subject to controls. Matt describes this as using a customer's API key, but OpenAI's announcement describes plan usage, not an app receiving a raw user API key. Also keep the plugin directory distinct from OpenAI's Marketplace, which the recap frames as enterprise partner-software procurement.

Anthropic: Sonnet 5.5 and Modifiable Claude Code

Claude Sonnet 5.5 is positioned for well-scoped daily work and is more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5, according to Anthropic. Its published standard API rate is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, against Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20. That is not a guarantee of half-price completed work: as Matt notes, a high-effort Sonnet run can consume more tokens. Compare accepted result per dollar and minute on the same task before switching a production workflow.

Claude Code Mods allow TypeScript-based changes to prompts, tool calls, permissions, and parts of the interface. This is powerful for teams with established engineering rules. It also changes the trust boundary: Anthropic says Mods are not sandboxed, so inspect code and limit installation to sources you trust.

Gemini 4 Argon: Announced, Not Broadly Available

Google's Gemini 4 Argon announcement emphasizes cyber-defense use, long outputs, and a one-million-token output limit. Matt discusses its benchmarks and unusually large-generation examples. For most readers the immediate fact is access: initial use is restricted to trusted cyber defenders through Fairwind. Google says wider paid API and AI Ultra access will follow. The published introductory pricing therefore should not be read as general availability today.

Five More Releases With Distinct Jobs

ReleasePractical job and access
Ideogram 4.5Iterative image editing and text-aware creative work. Matt tests repeated edits on one scene; judge preservation and edit quality on your own brand assets.
Strands Decider 2BOpen-weight, compact constrained decisions for routing or classification, including local execution. It is not a general writing model; review uncertain or consequential decisions.
xAI Team BotsPublic beta for Teams and Enterprise, with shared role instructions and team context. Individual conversations and personal memory remain separate; do not assume one pooled memory.
Eleven v4More expressive, controllable synthetic speech across ElevenLabs products and API. Use only voices and recordings you have rights to use.
MAI-Voice-2.1 and MAI-Transcribe-2-StreamingTwo different speech jobs: voice generation and low-latency speech-to-text. Test latency, accuracy, and price on the same recordings.

Sponsored segment, 13:55-15:07: Matt demonstrates Optimizely Virtual Teammates and an SEO/AI-search analyst. Treat it as a sponsored product demo, not independent evidence of business results. Optimizely's setup guide documents admin enablement and connected data sources; a useful test would compare its recommendations with the underlying analytics before acting.

The episode also discusses a US executive order on federal terminology. Its direction to federal agencies does not mean every private business must rename its AI work. Read the order itself before using the episode as a policy summary.

A Sensible Test for This Week

  1. Choose one repeated decision. For example, route incoming support requests to a human, a documented answer, or a specialist queue.
  2. Establish a baseline. Save 30-50 real, permissioned examples and human labels. Record current handling time and error cost.
  3. Try two approaches. A rule or compact decision model for the constrained choice, and an assistant for the explanation or draft. Use products you can actually access.
  4. Keep the approval boundary. Review external messages, account changes, purchases, and uncertain cases. Compare accuracy, total cost, and time saved before automating anything.

The valuable part may be a narrow, recurring outcome rather than another general chatbot. This prompt combines the episode's agent, decision, and review patterns without requiring a new launch or preview.

Common questions

Which launches in Matt Wolfe's AI news roundup can I use now?
GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Ideogram 4.5, and Eleven v4 have announced access paths, subject to plan and region. Dots is rolling out to eligible users; Decisions API is a limited preview, and Gemini 4 Argon starts with trusted cyber defenders.
Is Gemini 4 Argon available to everyone?
No. Google announced initial access for trusted cyber defenders through Fairwind. Wider paid API and AI Ultra access is planned for later.
Does Sign in with ChatGPT hand my API key to an app?
No. OpenAI describes eligible users bringing their ChatGPT plan allowance to participating apps with controls. That is not the same as disclosing a raw API key.
Is Sonnet 5.5 automatically cheaper than Opus 5.5 for every task?
No. Sonnet has lower published per-token pricing, but high-effort settings can use more tokens. Compare total cost, elapsed time, and accepted results on your own tasks.
