The AEO Risk: Commodity Content During Google's Spam Update

The answer

AEO is helpful SEO for pages that answer real questions clearly. It is not permission to manufacture hundreds of slight variations.

Search Engine Journal's August 22 SEO Pulse reported the August 2026 spam update alongside changes in AI Overviews. Google separately states that spam policies apply to generative AI responses and warns against scaled, low-value content.

Analysis: the update does not declare "AEO content" a spam category. The risk comes from using AI-search demand as a justification for commodity page multiplication.

What the evidence supports

Google's AI optimization guide asks publishers to provide unique, satisfying content and explicitly cautions against creating many pages for imagined query fan-outs. Its documentation update log says spam policies apply across Search, including AI features.

The safe conclusion is not that AI assistance is forbidden. It is that the editorial purpose and resulting value matter.

Five commodity patterns

  • One template repeated across every industry or location with minimal evidence.
  • FAQ pages generated from predicted questions nobody has validated.
  • Definitions that paraphrase the same top-ranking sources.
  • Comparison pages written without testing either option.
  • Automated updates that change dates without changing substance.

Safer content selection rules

  1. Start with a recurring sales, support, or implementation question.
  2. Require a first-hand observation, useful framework, or primary source.
  3. Choose one canonical page for one intent.
  4. Consolidate overlapping drafts before publication.
  5. Define what action the reader can take after the answer.

If the team cannot explain what the page contributes beyond existing results, it is not ready.

A seven-point editorial QA check

  • Is the opening answer accurate and specific?
  • Are material claims linked to credible sources?
  • Is analysis labeled as analysis?
  • Does the page contain evidence unavailable in a generic prompt?
  • Does it overlap an existing page?
  • Are the title, date, author, canonical, and internal links correct?
  • Would the page still deserve to exist without search traffic?

Yes. Google says its spam policies apply across Search, including generative AI responses.
How can AI-assisted content be safer?
Choose topics from real user needs, add expert evidence, verify claims, avoid near-duplicate fan-out pages, and keep a human accountable for publication.
