Why One AI Visibility Dashboard Can Mislead a UK Business

Keep the platform and market attached to the result

A combined visibility score can be useful for navigation, but it should not determine the next content investment on its own. Retain separate records for ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews, with the market, question set, and observation period attached.

Semrush's announcement on 13 October 2026 describes a UK/US benchmark covering January to July. It uses fixed monthly sets of 2.5 million UK and 25 million U.S. prompts for three platforms, plus a variable dataset for AI Overviews. The release reports differing brand and source patterns across platforms and markets.

That is newly published research about an earlier observation period. It is not a live October census, a Portugal benchmark, or evidence of your business's performance. Use it to question a global score, then design a smaller local measurement that supports your own decisions.

Build the smallest scorecard that preserves context

Choose a handful of questions that reflect the buying decisions you serve. Keep a branded identification question, a capability question, a provider-comparison question, and a question about limitations. Record the exact wording and why each matters to the business.

  • Platform, market, language, and observation date.
  • Question ID, exact wording, and stated intent.
  • Whether an answer was available in the tested surface.
  • Brand mention, owned-page citation, and explicit recommendation as separate events.
  • Answer accuracy, displayed source URLs, and unresolved claims.
  • Relevant referral or enquiry evidence, recorded separately.

A missing AI Overview is an observation about that result, not an automatic zero for every AI surface. A vendor score derived from its prompt database also has a different denominator from your ten-question panel. Label those differences where the reader sees the number.

Show how a blended score can hide a problem

In a fictional scorecard, a consultancy appears in eight of ten ChatGPT answers and two of ten AI Mode answers. Averaging those results produces 50%. That number hides which platform is weak and whether the business was mentioned positively, cited, or recommended.

Suppose the two AI Mode appearances describe an obsolete offer. The practical action is to inspect the claims and sources in that series. Publishing more articles because the blended score looks low would skip the actual problem. This example illustrates arithmetic and diagnosis, not a measured client result.

Keep changes in the method visible

Fix the question set for a defined review period. Record country and language settings, model or product version where visible, and whether search was enabled. Repeat important observations to learn how much the answer changes. Do not merge a new methodology into the old trend without a visible break.

For AI Overviews, test the designated queries and note whether an overview appeared. For conversational tools, preserve the prompt and the tool mode. These are different surfaces; the scorecard should respect their differences while using a consistent vocabulary for the events you observe.

Let a finding earn the next action

Use an action column with explicit reasoning: correct a recurring scope error, inspect an inaccessible evidence page, or gather better proof for an unanswered buyer question. A one-off absence may justify another observation before any content work.

I would start with one market and the platforms customers report using. Keep the scorecard small enough that someone reviews the actual answers. A scheduled research system becomes worthwhile when it reduces that review burden while preserving the evidence behind each decision.

Common questions

Should I measure ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, and AI Overviews separately?
Yes, retain separate observations for each platform and market. Use consistent questions and time windows within each series, and distinguish mentions, citations, recommendations, and business outcomes before drawing a conclusion from a combined dashboard.
Does this method guarantee AI search visibility?
No. This is a proposed editorial or operational method. Search indexing, citation, recommendation, and business outcomes depend on conditions outside the scope of this workflow.
