AI Search Visibility

What Should You Track Before Google Gives You AI Search Console Reports?

The answer

Track outcomes, prompt-level visibility, and source accuracy now. Do not wait for Google to hand you the perfect dashboard.

Google's June 3, 2026 Search Central announcement introduced dedicated generative AI performance reports in Search Console, including views for AI Overviews and AI Mode. But Google also said the rollout was only reaching a subset of websites at first.

What Google launched

The new reports add a clearer view of impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates inside generative AI search features. That is real progress. It is the best first-party visibility data Google has given site owners for AI search.

It is still not the same thing as complete measurement.

Why waiting is a mistake

If you wait for Google to make AI visibility perfectly measurable, you lose months of pattern recognition. You also risk optimizing for the wrong number once the report appears.

Dan Taylor argued in Search Engine Journal on July 30, 2026 that the new data can mislead marketers if they treat impression growth as business value. He pointed to three important limits:

  • no economic click value inside the report
  • position distortion when multiple AI links inherit position one
  • confusing averages that blend traditional results with AI surfaces

Analysis: the report is useful, but it is a visibility input, not a business scoreboard.

The interim stack

  1. Prompt set: keep a small recurring set of commercial and educational AI queries.
  2. Presence log: note whether you are cited, mentioned, or absent.
  3. Source accuracy check: inspect what the answer says, not only whether you appeared.
  4. Assisted conversion log: ask leads how they found you and keep AI-assisted discovery separate from classic organic.
  5. Page-level entry tracking: monitor which service or article pages become first-touch destinations.
  6. Weekly interpretation: convert the data into one action, not a vanity dashboard.

What not to do

Do not celebrate impressions without checking whether qualified inquiries, calls, or useful visits changed. Do not combine AI visibility data with traditional organic rankings and pretend the blended number explains buyer behavior.

Google's AI optimization guide still points toward useful, distinctive, people-first content. The reporting layer should support that work, not replace it.

Common questions

Has Google launched dedicated AI visibility reports in Search Console?
Yes, but Google said on June 3, 2026 that the reports were rolling out only to a subset of websites first.
Are these reports enough on their own?
No. They improve first-party visibility data, but they still leave major gaps around clicks, economic value, cross-engine comparisons, and recommendation quality.
What should a small brand track now?
Track branded AI queries, assisted conversions, page-level commercial entries, source accuracy, and recurring prompt checks across the engines that matter to your audience.
