Build a Branded AI Overview Answer Discrepancy Log

What should you do when an AI Overview gets a brand fact wrong?

Save the answer, isolate the disputed claim, and identify the best public evidence before changing anything. Then assign a repair owner and a recheck date. A discrepancy log turns an upsetting search result into a manageable content or source problem, with enough history to judge whether the repair helped.

Ahrefs' 2 October study reported AI Overviews in 82.91% of its branded U.S. desktop search-result crawls on 29 September. That is a vendor dataset, not a measure of how often JQ AI SYSTEMS customers see an answer. It is a reason to inspect brand-name results, not proof that any particular business has a problem.

Record one disputed claim per row

A screenshot alone hides the conditions that produced an answer. Keep the exact query, date and time, country, language, device, signed-in state if known, and whether the answer appeared in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Save the answer text and displayed source links. Record missing context as unknown instead of filling it from memory.

Give each disputed claim its own row. An answer can correctly describe a business while getting its location, offer, or delivery terms wrong. Separate those findings so the repair can be assigned to the relevant person.

  • Observation ID and search context.
  • Exact disputed wording and error category.
  • Approved fact, public evidence URL, and evidence review date.
  • Customer consequence, repair owner, and next action.
  • Source correction date, later observations, and current status.

Distinguish a wrong fact from an unanswered question

Use four practical categories: contradiction, ambiguity, unsupported detail, and missing information. A claim that a studio only serves Porto contradicts a published remote-service policy. A vague phrase such as “works internationally” may simply leave language or payment details unresolved. An absent offer is not automatically a factual error.

The following example is fictional. Northline Studio moved from a shared workspace to a remote operation. An AI answer still names the old address. Its website is current, but a directory retains the former location. The log should record both URLs and the discrepancy. A citation beside the answer does not establish that the directory caused every part of the generated text.

Prioritise the consequence for a buyer

Fix a false service promise, wrong contact route, or misleading eligibility claim before cosmetic wording. My proposed triage method uses three levels: critical when someone could take the wrong commercial action, material when provider fit is distorted, and minor when phrasing is imprecise but the decision remains sound.

Start with sources the business controls. Check the relevant page, related FAQs, profile descriptions, downloads, and visible structured data for contradictions. For an independent directory, prepare a factual correction with evidence through its normal process. Keep independent editorial judgments separate from errors; disagreement with a review is not a reason to rewrite it as brand copy.

Close the source repair and answer observation separately

A corrected page is a completed source action. An improved AI answer is a later observation. Keep two statuses so a successful content fix is not mistaken for a guaranteed search outcome. Recheck the same conditions where possible and record changed conditions when they cannot be held constant.

Automation can collect permitted observations, detect changed wording, and draft a review queue. A person should approve the disputed fact and the proposed correction. Start with the brand name and three important buyer questions. Expand only when the log produces useful decisions.

If your team repeatedly finds the same errors, a focused assessment can identify whether the recurring work belongs in a content process, a source-maintenance workflow, or a scheduled research system.

Common questions

What should I do if Google's AI Overview gets my business facts wrong?
Capture the answer and query context, compare each disputed claim with approved public evidence, assign the appropriate source correction, and recheck over time. Correcting a source does not guarantee that Google will immediately change its answer.
Does this method guarantee AI search visibility?
No. This is a proposed editorial or operational method. Search indexing, citation, recommendation, and business outcomes depend on conditions outside the scope of this workflow.
